COURSEWORK & SYLLABUS
Feeling at home is only a state of mind. Studying abroad will show you that people think and live differently than you, but you can always find a community of other students where you can belong. You will discover this city that is thousands of miles from where you grew up, will now be a place to call home. When it comes to learning culture, or a new language, the best way to learn is to immerse yourself into the country. By immersing yourself, you will pick up cultural cues that a textbook can’t provide you. You will become more well-rounded. Aside from learning the local language, you will have the amazing opportunity to take in a different culture. Make local friends to maximize your experience. Studying and living abroad is about becoming a global citizen.
‘Global’ is a prefix that adorns itself over schools, companies, associations, and grocery markets. When you think of the word global, ‘exotic’ trade-deals and political agendas might come to mind, but how often is the word associated with empathy? Not money, not a desire to conquer and colonize, global citizenship is one phrase that embodies empathy. Global citizenship isn’t an accessory to paste on your social feed, and it isn’t fodder for a hero or guilt complex. It isn’t an exclusive club that accepts one ideology or method either.
Global citizenship is for anyone who wants to commit to an empathetic and adaptable perspective of the world. No hefty donations or plane trips required.

Environmental design (landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning and art) encompasses a broad range of social, cultural and ecological issues that are shared by our French counterparts yet manifest themselves differently. Sometimes students admire design projects from other countries that they see online and wonder why such projects are not possible in their own city or country. Understanding the nuances of politics, policy, culture, geography, climate as well as social and environmental justice in another country and how they affect practice and urban development will help students better understand the underlying forces behind our designed environments. Education abroad expands the sources and references upon which students, as future designers of the built environment, can draw from.
We believe that actively appreciating diversity brings people together, and we know that fostering inclusion is essential to fulfilling our mission of creating a more just and peaceful world. We are committed to providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals from under-represented backgrounds and communities, including mixed heritage, foreign nationalities, and all socio-economic levels. We aim to make study abroad more accessible and meaningful for all participants (non- and U.S. Citizens). We also recognize that people of color may face unique challenges when studying abroad. Please get in touch for specialized support and advice to make the most of your experience. We’re always here to help.

3-UNIT SEMINAR
-
Paysage: French Landscapes is a seminar focused on landscape architecture and urban design in France, looking at how historic design traditions have shaped contemporary landscape practice in France today. Precedent studies on French public parks built in different eras will offer a window into French cultural and ecological values through the lens of public space. We will also study landscape typologies that have evolved from post-industrial sites such as former factories, rail depots and elevated train lines, into landscapes that are deeply woven into the urban fabric of French cities. The course will also explore French language and culture through texts, films and podcasts.
3-UNIT DESIGN STUDIO
-
Périphérique: Parisian Landscapes is a studio that investigates the physical, social and ecological dimensions of the Parisian landscape with an emphasis on its periphery and waterways. While the periphery is marked by a physical ring road that creates a separation between Paris and its surrounding suburbs, the cultural reality of this edge condition can only be understood from the ground. The rivers and canals that run through Paris and extend beyond the periphery are key to understanding its regional context. During this one-month intensive experience in Paris students will participate in on-site workshops, tours and seminars led by local academics and practitioners. In support of their studio project, daily excursions will immerse students in Paris’ urban landscape through walking, listening and touching in order to gain a multi-sensory and scalar understanding of the city.
