The faculty behind this program, Associate Professor Rennie Tang and Full-Time Lecturer Nina Briggs both have deep experience in the European context, especially France. Rennie and Nina have spent many years living, working, studying and teaching in France. Both have very strong French language proficiency and professional contacts in and around Paris. Nina’s years living in France and Rennie’s recent sabbatical in Paris are important resources and experiences that will contribute to the success of this program.

This program provides a unique opportunity for College of Environmental Design (Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning and Art) undergraduate and graduate students. From a disciplinary perspective, this is an immersive and experiential learning opportunity to live within so many of the landscapes, structures and public spaces that are at the foundations of the environmental design disciplines. This program opens a wide window for our students to explore the the diverse, rich, complex and contemporary landscape, garden, architecture, art and urban design history of France.

Your world and mind will be open. We surround ourselves with people and peers who have similar interests to us. Even if your peers are diverse, nothing can compare to living overseas for a month. You will not only learn about your host country’s culture, but you will learn more about your own culture. You will have the opportunity to see your own country through the lens of others.

A global citizen is someone who understands the complex relationships between different countries one who views the world without nationalistic or cultural bias and has empathy for those of different backgrounds and cultures. The empathy found in the heart of global citizens is the fuel for humanitarian efforts.

CPPLA has a long-standing tradition of faculty-led field trips as integral learning activities for all year levels across the program. Therefore education abroad is considered an extension of these local and regional field trips, allowing for a deeper and more immersive learning experience and exposure to a culture other than one's own.
